Maricopa County was one of five counties in the country to add more than 300,000 people between 2010 and 2020, and Phoenix was the fastest-growing large city in the country, increasing its population by 11.2%, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday.

Phoenix, which added 160,000 residents, passed Philadelphia to become the country’s fifth largest city, with a population of 1.608 million as compared to Philadelphia’s 1.603 million. New York City easily held the top spot, with a population of 8.8 million.

The Tucson metro was among five in the nation that crossed the 1-million-person threshold over the decade, and Buckeye was the fastest-growing city in the nation during that period, growing by nearly 80% to more than 91,000 residents. Goodyear was also among the top 10, increasing to more than 95,000 people.

In April, Census data showed Arizona failed to add enough people to add a House of Representatives district and electoral vote.

The state also grew in diversity. In Maricopa County, the percentage growth of residents who identified as Hispanic or Latino outpaced the percentage of residents who do not.
